Meet Tom Magrene

Tom’s work has centred on memory since the beginning of his undergraduate degree: personal memory, familial memory, and the intersections between these and wider societal, cultural, and underground histories, particularly from the UK and Europe.

Painting primarily with ink, he uses the fluidity of the medium to express layered and shifting representations of memory.

More recently, he has begun expanding his materials and approaches, integrating found objects and performance into his practice.

He currently holds a studio at Meadow Mill in Dundee.

Tom Magrane is an artist from Kennington, a village in Oxfordshire.

Now based in Dundee, he is focusing on building a body of work through exhibitions and residencies, with the intention of applying for a Master’s programme in the coming years.

Alongside his practice, he works part-time in the restaurant at Dundee’s theatre as both a kitchen porter and part of the front-of-house team.

Professional language Experience

Tom’s early travel experience includes family trips around Western Europe, accompanied by German studies at school up to the age of 18. His language learning continued informally through regular weekly conversations with a friend in Germany, giving him experience discussing art and art history in a foreign language. His work at an EF summer school in Oxford further strengthened his understanding of language learning environments, supporting learners from multiple linguistic backgrounds.
